BELIEVE: Humility

Sometimes we need to ‘get back to the basics’ – to be reminded of who and whose we are. All of this year we will be doing just that – fixing our faith on the God who has made us his own, through Jesus Christ and by the Holy Spirit, and exploring what our lives in Him entail. Truly, we are those on whom God has showered his kindness, and we are likewise called to reflect his kindness onto others. Today, Ray McMillan leads us to consider Jesus’ example in this – he who “went about doing good” – and to hear Paul’s call to the same: “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people…” (Galatians 6:10)

BELIEVE: Patience

This week we are reminded of a stark reality: it’s hard to wait! We need patience, whether we are awaiting the growth of a seed, the arrival of a new baby, or the birth of God’s new creation in our lives and in our world. Thankfully, by the ‘firstfruits’ of God’s own Spirit, we may bear the fruit of patience, assured of the hope: there is gonna be a day!

BELIEVE: Hope

Today, we heed Paul’s repeated encouragement in Titus 2 to be “self-controlled”, and ask: how is it that this can become a reality in our lives? The answer, again, is not merely “God” or “us”; but “God in us”.

BELIEVE: Peace

This week we consider another ‘fruit’ of God’s Spirit in our lives: Peace. By the grace of God, may we become people who can declare with King David, “I shall not want.”

BELIEVE: Joy

Continuing to ask, “Who are we becoming?” we today hear Paul’s call to “Rejoice in the Lord always!” Apparently, we are people who live with ‘Joy’; and, apparently, our joy is not so much tied to our circumstances as it is rooted in Christ. “Again I say: Rejoice!”

BELIEVE: Love

Turning now to key Christian virtues – those ‘fruit’ of God’s own Spirit which graciously spring to life within us – we first consider that most central of Christian virtues: Love. Who are we becoming? People who love God and others.

BELIEVE: Sharing Faith

Sometimes we need to ‘get back to the basics’ – to be reminded of who and whose we are. This week, we reflect on the story of the Apostle Peter, considering how each of us are called to seek and share Christ. In thinking about the practice of sharing our faith, we ask “what are we responsible for?” but also “who are we responsible to?”, and remember that the God who calls us is also the One who ensures our fruitfulness.
